At the very beginning we established a Skirl-specific formatting that is applied to all releases: a DVD-sized Digipak® with a limited print area—the dimensions of a regular CD jewel case—in the center of the packaging, resulting in the now Skirl-typical white band on top and bottom.
For the skirl album covers the designers at karlssonwilker inc. are able to try new design approaches. The starting point for this paticular record cover were plastic bags. These bags have been pulled apart, cut, stretched and overlapped in order to create different shapes, gradients or textures. After capturing the experimental restults by camera they have been digitally distorted to create the artwork for the CD cover.
Skirl Records is an artist-run/independent label founded in 2006, documenting a community of composers/improvisers that drive the fertile Brooklyn music scene. The artists on Skirl bring a powerful singular vision to each release, while the catalogue as a whole transcends genre, skirting the boundaries between jazz, rock, electronic, classical and improvised music.
For this record New York-based composer, saxophonist, and flutist Anna Webber released 'Binary' with her band the SIMPLE Trio, featuring John Hollenbeck on drums and Matt Mitchell on piano.
